02.04.2012, News about the kit materials and our contribution to the environment

Our kits are made up of cardboard, which is exclusively produced from ECF-approved fresh fibre. ECF pulp is a  primary fibre, which is bleached 'chlorine-free', thus dispensing with traditional chlorine bleach. Instead of chlorine bleach, chlorine dioxide is used, which reduces the AOX-pollution of water by 60-80%.

Additionally, the cardboard fulfils the criteria of the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) environmental label, and can be delivered in the 'FSC mixed credit' product class. The FSC label is one of the currently most distinguished certification marks.

The FSC seal of approval guarantees that the required wood for cardboard production is obtained within the framework of sustainable forestry without the use of tropical timber or overexploitation.

Wood is generally a renewable resource, whic, under ecological aspects, can have a positive balance sheet.

Our kits are made from colored through, non-fade, stable architecture carton of the highest quality.

The raw material consists of 100% renewable resources and is produced without the use of oils or synthetic plastics, another small contribution to an intact environment.

The kits and their packaging are 100% produced in Germany and are completely recyclable.

Our print products are produced in a climate-neutral way.

The required and recommended glue (wood- or white glue) is also free of solvents and toxic fumes.

Color treatment is not necessary, however, should you wish to 'weather' a building, it is easy to dispense with toxic paint. Natural pigments, chalks or crayons are often sufficient to personalise a kit.

We choose many beautiful matte colors for our base materials, thus giving our kits a very natural look already.

Construction

The buildings and technical structures are made up of several layers, using the 'sandwich'-method. The wall elements are interlocked and mortised with the basic framework. With careful assembly, it is almost impossible to end up with wonky or lopsided parts.

On top of this framework, the surface layers are fixed, from one to several layers, depending on the complexity of the building or facade.

We use the corresponding carton for each color required, for example steel framework is laser-cut in green, whereas the brick inlays are later laser-etched in red.

For multi-storeyed buidlings, there's always 'false ceilings' to facilitate illumination; additionally, the buidlings become stiffer, so even very large walls do not bulge out.

The laser cuts very accurately, so the cutting edges do not have to be refinished. Only on very light colored plaster facades do we recommend treating the visible edges with sand paper (200 grain); for better visual effect.
