Hammerhead Tower Erin Shaft III
This hammerhead tower was built between 1918 and 1921. Advances in steel construction technology and the introduction of the electric hoisting machine made it possible to place the machine with traction sheave vertically above the shaft so that the rope hung directly down into the shaft. This eliminated the need for a machine house, but of course it was still necessary to accommodate cabs. These protruded above the base, this shape giving the building the name Hammerhead Tower. This tower was restored in 1993 and can still be seen today in Castrop-Rauxel.
Reproduced in the model: Brick construction steel framework , circulation with openwork walkway and fine railing, filigree muntin windows. Reproduction of the upper conveyor wheel. Absolutely true-to-scale realization of the prototype with original plans.
